Ford rehired 350 engineers after artificial intelligence failed to meet the desired quality control levels. The engineers, some of whom were former employees, will train younger workers and help reprogram the AI to improve quality checks.
According to Charles Poon, vice president of vehicle hardware engineering, the company mistakenly thought that introducing AI would produce high-quality products without considering the experience of knowledgeable engineers. The rehired engineers, referred to as “gray beard” engineers, will contribute to training and reprogramming the AI, but this may be a temporary victory for human labor.

Ford has deployed 900 AI-powered cameras to detect quality issues and is on pace to have fewer recalls in 2026. The company ranked top in the JD Power Initial Quality Study amongst mainstream brands, indicating some benefit from the quality checks.
Despite this, CEO Jim Farley has admitted that artificial intelligence will replace half of all white-collar workers, raising concerns about responsible implementation and the potential displacement of the human workforce.
