Australian Ford Tourneo Diesel Gets Officially Replaced By PHEV

The Ford Tourneo, introduced to the Australian market in 2024 as a highly configurable model seating up to eight people, is undergoing a major powertrain shift. Initially launched with a single powertrain option—a 2.0L EcoBlue diesel engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels—the lineup is now dropping the diesel altogether.

A plug-in hybrid joined the lineup a year after the launch, and according to CarExpert, it will officially replace the diesel engine between April and June 2027 as part of a mid-year update. The 2027.5 Ford Tourneo PHEV features a 2.5L four-cylinder gas engine paired with an electric motor and a CVT transmission, delivering up to 51 kilometers (32 miles) of all-electric driving range on the WLTP cycle.

The PHEV will be available in Active and Titanium trims, matching the outgoing diesel variants, though its starting price is a few thousand higher depending on the chosen grade. Ford attributed the change to Australia’s tightening National Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), which faces stricter carbon dioxide limits at the start of 2027.

A Ford Australia spokesperson stated that the standard was a factor in the decision, helping improve Ford’s overall emissions position while maintaining flexibility and capability. The company expects customer interest in the PHEV but does not forecast a fundamentally different sales rate compared to current performance.
