Modern vehicles equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are more expensive to repair after a crash, due to the high cost of replacing sensors, cameras, and other complex hardware. However, data from the IIHS-HLDI suggests that these vehicles are involved in significantly fewer accidents, which can lead to overall cost savings for drivers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, vehicle repair prices have increased by over 40 percent since 2020, but this is not solely due to the added cost of ADAS. Other factors, such as the increasing complexity of headlights, the growing popularity of SUVs and pickups, and the use of advanced powertrains, also contribute to higher repair costs. The IIHS-HLDI data shows that collision claim severity is about 10 percent higher for cars with driver aids, but collision claim frequency is roughly 10 percent lower, and property-damage liability claims fall by almost 40 percent. This means that overall collision losses are reduced by about 5 percent, and property-damage losses drop by nearly 30 percent. While the high cost of repairing ADAS-equipped vehicles can be frustrating, the fact that they help prevent accidents in the first place can lead to significant cost savings for drivers. As the technology continues to evolve, automakers will need to find ways to make sensors, parts, and calibrations more affordable to repair.
