BMW is preparing to unveil the next-generation X5, which will feature a significant design departure: door handles integrated directly into the beltline. This marks the first series-production BMW to adopt this feature, though similar designs have been seen on models like the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The new X5 will also incorporate winglets for the rear doors. While BMW has not officially detailed the reasoning, potential benefits include a cleaner profile aligning with the “Neue Klasse” design language focused on reduction, and possible aerodynamic improvements, particularly for the upcoming all-electric iX5 variant. The iX5 will boast the largest battery pack in a BMW model, with usable capacities of 141 kWh in Europe and 144 kWh in the United States. This new door handle design first appeared on limited-run models like the Skytop (50 units) and Speedtop (70 units), both based on the M8. The next-generation X7, expected in 2027, will also adopt this integrated handle design, as will potentially the X6 in 2028. Both the X7 and X6 are also slated to receive fully electric variants for the first time. The X5, internally codenamed “G65,” will offer five drivetrain options, including gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric (iX5), and a hydrogen counterpart (iX5 Hydrogen) arriving in 2028. The iX5 Hydrogen is being developed in partnership with Toyota. BMW previously had to redesign door handles for the Chinese market iX3 and i3 due to new safety regulations, switching from pop-out handles to a semi-enclosed design. The manufacturer anticipates that the new integrated handles on the X5 will blend into the beltline, especially with a glossy black finish, and is unlikely to offer conventional handles as an alternative due to added complexity and cost.
