Mercedes-AMG has unleashed its latest fire-breathing V8 SUVs, the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+, packing a thoroughly reworked 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that still delivers 450 kW (612 PS) and 850 Nm of torque. The heart of both models is the new M177 EVO engine, a flat-plane-crank unit that revs harder, responds quicker and meets the toughest global emissions rules without giving an inch on performance. A 48-volt mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator (ISG) 2.0 adds 17 kW (23 PS) and 205 Nm on tap, smoothing out low-speed punch and harvesting energy under deceleration. Both SUVs sprint from 0–100 km/h in 3.9 s (GLE) or 4.2 s (GLS) and top out at 280 km/h. Fuel sippers they are not: combined consumption sits between 13.1–13.7 L/100 km depending on body style, with CO₂ emissions from 297–312 g/km (class G). The front end is all new, flaunting an AMG-specific grille, bigger air intakes and signature LED lighting, while the rear sports the growling AMG Performance exhaust with switchable flap control that lets you dial the soundtrack from subtle to full-throated. Inside, the MANUFAKTUR programme offers bespoke trims and tech, and the adaptive AMG RIDE CONTROL+ chassis lets you toggle between comfort and outright sportiness at the touch of a button. AMG calls it the purest expression of its V8 soul yet—ready for tomorrow’s regulations, but still bristling with the raw character that made the V8 legend.
