Mercedes-AMG’s Upcoming EV Looks Bland, But Will Let The Performance Do The Talking

Mercedes-AMG is aiming to redeem itself after the polarizing GT 4-Door with the upcoming electric GLA, a hot hatch-inspired crossover that blends understated styling with serious performance chops.

Spy shots in Europe have captured the AMG GLA Electric in camouflage, revealing a package that looks suspiciously like a stretched hatchback but packs serious hardware under the skin.

The exterior is relatively tame, with heavy camouflage obscuring the front end, but key AMG cues are visible: star-infused headlights, a wide lower intake, extended fender flares hinting at a wider track, lightweight wheels, and a beefy braking system with red calipers up front.

Low-profile tires and a sport-tuned suspension with a lower ride height further underscore its performance intent.

The rear end is unremarkable in prototype form, though the production model may feature a slightly sportier bumper.

Inside, the cabin largely carries over from the MMA platform’s donor models, but AMG adds performance-focused touches.

A leather and Alcantara flat-bottom steering wheel features two lower buttons with integrated displays, while silver trim and heavily bolstered seats with white contrast stitching add visual flair.

The digital instrument cluster (10.25-inch) and infotainment system (14-inch) are expected, along with an optional 14-inch front passenger display. The GLA Electric will be offered in 250+ and 350 4MATIC variants.

The latter, based on the CLA’s setup, features an 85 kWh battery, dual-motor all-wheel drive, 349 HP (260 kW / 354 PS), 380 lb-ft (515 Nm) of torque, a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) sprint in 4.8 seconds, and an EPA-estimated range of 312 miles (502 km).

The AMG variant is expected to blow past those figures, with rumors pointing to a triple-motor setup producing over 500 HP (373 kW / 507 PS). This could be paired with a unique battery offering higher energy density than the standard model.

The layout mirrors the AMG GT 4-Door’s, which uses two axial flux motors at the rear and one up front, though the GT 4-Door’s output is far higher at 1,153 HP (860 kW / 1,169 PS).

Expect the AMG GLA Electric to bridge the gap between practicality and performance when it arrives, proving that sometimes, the numbers—and not the looks—speak loudest.
