Suzuki’s pint-sized mid-engine supercar with gullwing doors packs just 64 HP

Suzuki’s Cara is a rebadged twin of Mazda’s Autozam AZ-1, a mid-engine Kei sports car that debuted in the early 1990s.

Only 533 examples of the Cara were built, making it far rarer than its Mazda counterpart, of which 4,392 units were produced.

This particular 1993 Suzuki Cara has surfaced on Bring a Trailer, fresh off a trans-Pacific trip after being imported from Japan last March.

It’s now on the block with roughly 20,000 miles (32,000 km) on the odometer and wearing its original Classic Red paint with Venetian Gray bumpers and rocker panels.

The Cara’s gullwing doors and supercar-inspired silhouette remain intact, along with the signature mid-engine layout.

Power comes from a 657 cc turbocharged inline-three, rated at 64 horsepower and 63 lb-ft of torque, routed to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.

The cabin stays true to the Kei sports-car ethos, with fixed-back bucket seats in black cloth with red inserts, a three-spoke steering wheel, functional air conditioning, and an original cassette stereo.

Bidding for this pint-sized exotic closes in less than a week on Bring a Trailer, where it’s listed alongside a recent Autozam AZ-1 that sold for $63,000.

With Kei cars gaining traction in the U.S. thanks to relaxed import rules and growing interest, this could be a timely opportunity to snag a rare piece of Japanese micro-supercar history before prices climb further.
