The British Grand Prix 2026 delivered a thrilling Saturday at Silverstone, setting the stage for an unpredictable Sunday showdown. Kimi Antonelli claimed pole position ahead of the Grand Prix, while George Russell lined up fourth after a dramatic qualifying session. Antonelli had already dominated the Sprint earlier in the day, overtaking Lewis Hamilton on track to secure his first Sprint victory, while Russell fought hard to hold off McLaren’s Lando Norris and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to finish fourth. The Ferrari duo of Hamilton and Charles Leclerc remained the biggest threat throughout the session. In qualifying, a tight battle for pole unfolded between Mercedes and Ferrari. Russell survived a scare in Q1 when a sudden gust of wind sent him off track, briefly clipping the wall in the gravel trap before recovering to continue. He pushed hard in Q3 but was compromised by traffic on his final out-lap, leaving him fourth. Antonelli, meanwhile, delivered a flawless final run in Q3 to secure pole with a 1:28.111, his best lap of the weekend so far. Speaking after the session, Antonelli praised the car’s balance and admitted early Sprint struggles before finding rhythm and capitalizing on the opportunity to pass Hamilton. He acknowledged Ferrari’s strong pace at Silverstone and stressed the need for Mercedes to be at their best tomorrow. Russell reflected on a challenging day, citing straight-line speed issues and traffic woes that cost him a shot at the top three. Despite the setback, he remains confident heading into race day, targeting a strong start and a push for the podium. Team principal Toto Wolff admitted Ferrari had the edge in raw pace from the start, forcing Mercedes to dig deep. He highlighted Antonelli’s aggressive overtaking in the Sprint and Russell’s resilience in a multi-car scrap, while noting the impact of traffic on Russell’s final qualifying attempt. Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin revealed the team had made minimal changes after Friday’s struggles, trusting the car’s long-run capability. He described the windy conditions as tricky, with Russell’s Q1 excursion caused by locked-up front wheels sending him into the gravel. Shovlin praised Antonelli’s Q3 performance, calling it a “brilliant lap,” but acknowledged Russell’s frustration at not capitalizing on his final run. The Mercedes W16 showed strong form in both Sprint and qualifying, but the Ferraris remain a handful on Silverstone’s high-speed layout. With a long race ahead and multiple strategy variables in play, Sunday promises fireworks as Mercedes look to convert their Saturday momentum into a Sunday victory.
