In 1938, Mercedes-Benz shattered the world land speed record on a public road with a heavily modified W125 Grand Prix car, clocking 268.9 mph on a stretch of Germany’s Autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt. The attempt was part of Nazi Germany’s propaganda-driven Record Week, a high-speed competition designed to showcase the Autobahn’s engineering prowess.

The car, piloted by racing legend Rudolf Caracciola, featured a 5.6-liter twin-supercharged V12 engine producing 765 horsepower, with Mercedes ditching traditional radiators in favor of an ice-filled water jacket to prevent overheating during short bursts of extreme speed. The streamlined, enclosed bodywork—shaped using early wind-tunnel data originally developed for zeppelins—cut through the air with minimal drag, pushing the W125 to speeds previously thought impossible.

The record stood as the fastest speed ever achieved on a public road for nearly eight decades. Mercedes’ rival, Auto Union, also brought a heavily updated Type C with a V16 engine to the event.

During practice, driver Bernd Rosemeyer allegedly hit 267 mph, but his official attempt ended in tragedy when he lost control at high speed, crashed, and was killed. Some speculate his run may have been fast enough to reclaim the record, but it was never officially recorded.

The Mercedes W125’s record remained unbroken until 2017, when Swedish hypercar manufacturer Koenigsegg demolished it with its Agera RS. Driven by factory test pilot Niklas Lilja on a Nevada highway, the Agera RS—packing 1,200 horsepower—achieved a two-way average of 277.87 mph, with a top speed of 284.6 mph on the return run.

Unlike the Mercedes’ propaganda-backed feat, Koenigsegg’s record was a pure display of automotive engineering, proving that a street-legal production car could hit such speeds without a dedicated race track or salt flat. The Nevada highway, chosen for its long, straight, and flat layout, became the unlikely stage for the new benchmark in public road speed.

The Agera RS’s record run underscored the rapid evolution of hypercars, which now routinely surpass speeds once reserved for purpose-built land-speed vehicles. While the Mercedes W125’s achievement was tied to a dark chapter of history, Koenigsegg’s 2017 record marked a turning point—showing how far technology had come in just under a century.
