The 1969 Hurst/Olds is one of the most collectible muscle cars of its era, thanks in part to its infamous ‘His and Hers’ shifter—a dual-gate selector that offered drivers a choice between effortless automatic cruising and hands-on manual-style shifting. Only 906 examples were built for the 1969 model year, making this Hurst/Olds a rare gem.

The shifter’s design split the transmission gate into two channels: one for conventional Drive operation and another for precise, gear-by-gear control without the risk of overshooting.

While the marketing leaned into outdated gender stereotypes, the engineering behind it was ahead of its time, blending convenience with driver engagement in a way that still feels clever today. The car itself is a standout, featuring a concours-level frame-off restoration using NOS parts.

Power comes from Oldsmobile’s legendary 455 cubic-inch (7.5-liter) Rocket V8, rated at 380 HP (283 kW), mated to a Turbo 400 automatic transmission. This particular example, chassis number 176, recently sold at Mecum’s Indy auction for $187,000.

The Hurst/Olds also represents a fascinating footnote in Detroit history, as GM’s corporate rules at the time capped intermediate cars at 400 cubic inches—yet this 455-powered coupe slipped through the cracks. The Dual Gate shifter embodied that same spirit of rule-bending ingenuity.

While modern automakers like Porsche now rely on software to simulate multi-gear engagement in single-speed EVs, the Hurst/Olds proved that hardware could deliver the same thrill decades earlier.
