Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings reported stronger second-quarter results, with net income rising 26.1% to $43.2 million and revenue increasing 12.6% to $2.1 billion. The company’s truckload segment revenue grew 2.8% to $1.1 billion, while operating income surged 96.3% to $89.1 million. CEO Adam Miller attributed the improvement to supply-driven tightening in the truckload market, which has been rapidly progressing over the past few months. Miller noted that spot rates are trending well ahead of normal seasonality, and contractual bid activity is becoming increasingly supportive. The company expects market tightening to continue, driven by supply dynamics, and believes that a recent Supreme Court ruling on broker liability could further reduce carrier capacity and create opportunities. Knight-Swift’s scale, pricing flexibility, cross-brand collaboration, and driver-training programs position it well for a tightening market. The company’s revenue per mile began recovering in the quarter, with contract-rate gains reflecting bids priced earlier in the year. Analysts at TD Cowen expect cycle tailwinds to build into the second half of the year, with higher over-the-road utilization and pricing helping to improve margins. The Supreme Court’s decision in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, which overturned a widely accepted interpretation of federal law, is expected to tighten the market as marginal carriers get squeezed out. Miller believes that the ruling will not increase costs for Knight-Swift’s asset-based operations and could create future business opportunities. The company’s customers remain optimistic, and peak-season demand support is expected to continue. However, recruiting and retaining quality drivers has become more challenging due to the tightening market conditions.
