Ferrari’s Dino ditched its original V6 for a V8—and now it’s hammering past $800,000 at auction

The classic Ferrari Dino 246 GTS has always lived in the shadow of the Prancing Horse’s full-blooded V12s and V8s, but one heavily modified example is proving that money doesn’t care about originality.

This 1972 Dino 246 GTS, originally fitted with a 2.4-liter V6, has been transformed into a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 monster by UK specialist Moto Technique between 2017 and 2018.

The swap ditches the Dino’s original 2.4-liter V6 for a 3.6-liter Tipo 105C V8, complete with individual throttle bodies, modified cylinder heads, and a MoTec engine management system.

Power is estimated at around 400 HP, routed through a five-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels.

The mechanical overhaul also includes an aluminum radiator, coilover shocks, and front and rear anti-roll bars.

The Dino’s bodywork was stripped to bare metal and resprayed in black, now wearing Perspex headlight covers, 17-inch wheels, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber. Braking duties are handled by Ferrari 360 Modena brakes.

Inside, the cabin features red and black leather Daytona-style seats, red carpeting, a gated shifter, and an iPod-ready sound system. Since the rebuild, the car has covered approximately 8,500 miles (13,679 km).

Bidding on this modified Dino has already exceeded $800,000 at auction, a price typically reserved for full-blooded Ferraris rather than Dino-branded models. The listing is live on Bring a Trailer.
