BMW has unveiled the fifth-generation X5, a model that has redefined the mid-size luxury crossover segment since its debut in 1999.

Now in its 27th year, the X5 returns with a radical overhaul that introduces the brand’s first battery-electric powertrain in the form of the iX5, alongside a hydrogen-powered variant.

The new X5 also incorporates design elements from BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, which has already debuted on models like the i3 and iX3, while retaining the CLAR architecture underpinning the outgoing generation.

The result is a striking departure from the outgoing G05 X5, blending futuristic Neue Klasse styling with the X5’s signature presence.

The front end features BMW’s iconic upright kidney grilles—now larger and more squared-off—flanked by illuminated contours and trapezoidal headlights pushed to the edges of the fascia.

The headlights, with their distinctive X-shaped running lights, have drawn mixed reactions; they can be switched off to reveal a cleaner look inspired by the iX3’s design.

The side profile is monolithic and slab-sided, with aggressive wheel arch scoops, wide side skirts, and BMW’s signature Hofmeister kink in the D-pillar.

The wheelbase has grown by 2.4 inches, pushing the wheels closer to the corners, though the exact length of the new X5 has not been specified.

The rear features long, intricate taillights that visually widen the SUV, paired with a gloss black lower bumper and diffuser.

Inside, the X5 retains BMW’s sporty yet comfortable interior, now infused with Neue Klasse design cues.

The iX5 and hydrogen versions share the same exterior design as the gas-powered models, with only minor differences in the lower bumper air intakes. The split-folding tailgate, a hallmark of the X5 since its introduction, has been discontinued.

Buyers can customize the new X5 with an M Sport package for a more aggressive look, or the M Sport Professional package, which adds 22-inch wheels, red M Sport brakes, and additional black trim.

The X5 will be offered with 10 wheel designs ranging from 21 to 23 inches and 11 exterior colors, including five new shades—three of which are variations of gray.
