Readers are loudly calling for automakers to revive the sedan, arguing that the body style offers superior efficiency and driving dynamics compared to today’s crossover-dominated market. The push comes as EVs have mainstreamed, where a low, sleek sedan’s aerodynamics can deliver better range than a tall, boxy family hauler — all else being equal.
While sedans aren’t as popular as they once were, the U.S. still has solid options: the Toyota Corolla (cheap and reliable), the Honda Civic (a bit more premium), the Hyundai Elantra (great value, with a sporty variant that rivals the Civic Type R), and even Cadillac’s sport sedans. But many say that’s not enough.

On Tuesday, readers were asked to name automakers that should bring back more sedans. The responses were passionate — and specific.

Ford topped the list, with multiple commenters suggesting a 4-door Mustang V8 as a halo model and a new hatchback based on the EZ-6 platform (or similar) to rival the Kia Stinger. Mazda was a close second, with calls to revive the Miata’s spirit in a modern Protege or 323 GTX, and to bring back a large, luxurious sedan like the 929.

Rivian was suggested as the ideal EV sedan alternative for those avoiding Tesla. Buick drew attention for its potential to revive the Regal — not just as a family sedan, but with a turbo V-6 Grand National variant using the CT4 Blackwing’s engine and transmission.

Commenters also floated the idea of a Regal TourX wagon revival, inspired by Mercedes’ E450 All-Terrain and BMW’s return to the wagon market with the M5. Even a full-size Buick Roadmaster with a new 5.7L V-8 was floated as a niche enthusiast model.

The Big Three — Ford, GM, and Chrysler — were criticized for ceding the entry-level market to foreign brands like Honda, Toyota, and Kia, potentially losing future loyalty. Saab fans pleaded for a comeback, while Pagani was jokingly suggested to build the wildest sedan possible before the segment disappears.
Mitsubishi was urged to bring back the Lancer and Galant, including the Evo and VR4 trims. Some readers wanted Ford to revive the Panther platform with a modern RWD body-on-frame sedan.

Others called for a budget Saturn sedan with great MPG, plastic panels, and ultra-low running costs. The message is clear: the sedan isn’t dead — it just needs a revival. And readers have made their picks.
