Geely Auto released its third‑quarter financials on October 29, 2026, reporting total revenue of 99 billion yuan (US$14.8 billion) and a core net profit attributable to the parent company of 5.21 billion yuan (US$777.6 million). The numbers, however, expose a stark reality: domestic car sales in China are barely profitable. In the first nine months of 2026, Geely exported 343,700 vehicles, prompting the company to lift its annual export target from 640,000 to 920,000 units.
Exports alone generated 4.84 billion yuan (US$722.4 million) of net profit in Q3, according to CNstock. With 812,500 units sold in the quarter—including 323,700 export units—exports accounted for roughly 39.8 % of total sales but delivered 92.9 % of the group’s profit. In other words, the more than 60 % of sales made in China contributed only 7 % of profit.

New‑energy vehicles (NEVs) have become the cornerstone of Geely’s export strategy; the company shipped 484,000 NEVs in the first three quarters, a 531 % jump from the previous year. On the same day, BYD, China’s largest NEV maker, posted Q3 revenue of 221.49 billion yuan (US$33.1 billion) and a net profit of 10.02 billion yuan (US$1.5 billion), up 28.08 % YoY. BYD did not disclose export‑profit details, but noted that overseas sales are now a core growth engine.
In September alone, BYD exported over 180,700 NEVs, a 153.6 % YoY increase. The data underline the fierce competition in China’s automotive market and suggest that only a shift in the industry’s structure will allow manufacturers to achieve sustainable profitability.
