A high-speed police chase involving a Chevrolet Corvette reached speeds of more than 150 mph before the car ended up engulfed in flames with no driver in sight. According to reports from CBS 6 Albany and News 10 ABC, the incident took place in Clifton Park, New York, on Monday night at approximately 10:20 pm. New York State Police troopers attempted to stop the Corvette, which was traveling at speeds up to 154 mph on Route 9 in Saratoga County. The driver allegedly refused to pull over and instead jumped onto Interstate 87 southbound, with troopers still in pursuit.
New York State Police had significant horsepower at their disposal, including Ford Mustang GT patrol cars. But at speeds exceeding 150 mph, the chase became less about horsepower and more about keeping everyone alive. Rather than continue the high-speed pursuit, troopers reportedly radioed ahead to have tire-deflation devices deployed in the Corvette’s path. Police say the tire-deflation device was successfully deployed, yet the Corvette still managed to disappear into the night.
At least for about half an hour. At 11 pm, the Corvette was reportedly spotted near Southbury Road and Montgomery Way in Clifton Park. It had finally stopped, but it was now on fire, according to police, and the driver was nowhere to be found.
The driver remains unidentified, no arrests have been made, and NYSP is working with the Saratoga County Office of Emergency Management Fire Investigation Unit to determine what caused the blaze. Was the sports car stolen? Was the driver simply desperate to avoid getting caught driving so fast? Was the car purposely set on fire? There are more questions than answers right now. One thing is certain: the Corvette certainly didn’t get a happy Hollywood ending.
