Mitsubishi has confirmed it will revive the Pajero SUV after discontinuing it in 2021, with the new model debuting this fall. The all-new Pajero will ride on a ladder-frame platform derived from the Triton pickup truck, featuring a bespoke suspension, four-wheel drive, and a dedicated interior. The SUV is positioned as Mitsubishi’s flagship vehicle and will serve as the foundation for a potential off-road-focused Ralliart variant. Mitsubishi originally established the Ralliart division in 1984 to enhance performance and styling, competing directly with Subaru’s STI. The brand was scaled back in 2010 due to financial strain but was revived in 2020. Bruce Hampel, general manager for product strategy at Mitsubishi Motors Australia, told CarSales, “It would be lovely to have a Pajero Ralliart,” emphasizing the model’s historical ties to rallying, including Pajero’s success in the Dakar Rally and Lancer Evolution’s dominance in the World Rally Championship. The revival of the Pajero also coincides with the return of the Montero, which Mitsubishi discontinued in the U.S. after the 2006 model year. If the Pajero arrives in America, it may share a powertrain with the Nissan Xterra, likely featuring the 3.8-liter V6 from the Frontier, producing 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. The move aligns with the growing demand for off-road-oriented SUVs, where visual capability often translates to real-world performance. Mitsubishi’s strategy suggests a focus on blending rugged utility with performance enhancements, particularly through the Ralliart badge.
