Volkswagen has quietly slipped a new electric SUV into its ID lineup with a twist: a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder range-extender hiding under the hood.
The ID.Era 8X rides on the same platform as the flagship ID.9X but lands at a lower price point while offering a gas-powered backup for drivers who still can’t get their hands on a full EV in some markets. The 8X comes with two battery options: a 51.1-kWh pack and a larger 65.2-kWh unit.
The smaller battery delivers up to 162 miles (260 km) of electric-only range, while the bigger pack pushes that figure to 214 miles (345 km).

The range-extender engine cranks out 295 horsepower (220 kW) in all configurations, pairing with the electric motor to keep the wheels turning once the battery drains.

Visually, the 8X is nearly identical to the 9X, sharing the same modern silhouette and tech-forward design cues.
The front end features a glossy black grille with active elements, a full-width LED light bar, and vertical headlight clusters. The rear mirrors the 9X with its own LED light bar and an illuminated VW badge.
Dimensions-wise, the 8X measures 197.6 inches (5,020 mm) long, 78.6 inches (1,997 mm) wide, and 68.9 inches (1,750 mm) tall, with a 116.9-inch (2,970 mm) wheelbase.

By comparison, the 9X stretches 205 inches (5,207 mm) long, sits slightly taller at 71.2 inches (1,810 mm), and rides on a longer 120.8-inch (3,070 mm) wheelbase.
VW plans to offer four distinct trims of the ID.Era 8X, all sharing the 1.5L turbo range-extender but varying in battery size and weight.

The lightest version tips the scales at 5,478 lbs (2,485 kg), while the heaviest comes in at 5,709 lbs (2,590 kg).
Pricing and full availability details are still under wraps, with Volkswagen promising more information later this year.
