A new study from MIT has dismantled the viral social media claim that electric vehicles (EVs) are secretly worse for the planet than gas-powered cars. Using data from every U.S. zip code, researchers found that battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) consistently produce 40%–60% fewer emissions than internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) across most regions.

The savings vary dramatically depending on location, with extreme cases showing anywhere from 0% to 82% reductions in emissions. The study highlights that the electricity grid’s carbon intensity is the biggest factor in these regional differences—cleaner grids yield greater emissions benefits for EVs.

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) also deliver significant emissions savings, though their performance hinges on driving patterns and charging habits. In urban areas, PHEVs achieve 80%–90% of the emissions reductions of BEVs, while in rural regions, that figure drops to 60%—assuming drivers charge regularly.

Individual driving behaviors can swing emissions savings as much as regional factors, underscoring the importance of how and where EVs are used. The study also addresses cold-weather concerns, noting that while extreme winter conditions can reduce BEV efficiency by up to 50% on particularly harsh nights, these effects are temporary and don’t significantly impact annual emissions reductions.

Researchers caution that their model doesn’t account for future grid improvements, which could further amplify EV’s environmental advantages as electricity generation decarbonizes. The findings come amid persistent online debates fueled by anecdotal claims, but the MIT data provides a data-driven counterpoint to the misinformation circulating on platforms like Facebook.
