Porsche has confirmed it is developing a permanent mid-engine supercar that will sit above the 911 in its lineup — the first time the brand has done so. The concept previewing the production model is called the Mission S, and its design is a deliberate nod to Porsche’s racing and heritage models. Round headlights echo the 911, the front end and roof scoop pay homage to the 911 GT1, the rear car-in-a-car motif references the same GT1, the rear wing recalls the 959, the radiator fan over the engine is lifted straight from the 917 racer, and the wheels derive from the 928’s dial design.

Porsche has not committed to a specific powertrain publicly, but told Car and Driver the production line will support pure gasoline engines, traditional hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. Rumors point to a flat-eight engine mounted between the axles for the combustion version. The automaker also confirmed there will be no fully electric variant, citing a lack of demand in the segment.

Inside, the Mission S leans heavily analog. Rather than a push-button start, it uses a physical key. There is no center screen; instead, a retractable magnetic smartphone holder takes its place, meaning navigation and other information come from your phone. The cabin blends real switches with modern displays, a philosophy Porsche says is about how the car makes the driver feel — a lesson reportedly learned from the analog-focused interior of the Bugatti Tourbillon, despite Porsche selling its stake in the French marque earlier this year.

Pricing and an exact production timeline remain unconfirmed. Given Porsche’s recent plans to raise prices on its GT models, the new line could start around $500,000. The Mission S looks production-ready, but arrival is expected no earlier than 2029.

This marks a significant shift for Porsche, which has long guarded the 911’s position at the top of its range. Past high-performance models like the 959, Carrera GT, and 918 made only brief appearances, and the 718 has traditionally been kept below the 911 in performance terms. Now, a permanent model above the 911 is officially in development.
