Mazda has been compelled to make the 2027 Mazda MX-5 Roadster in Japan noticeably quieter to meet stricter noise regulations that take effect on July 1. The changes include a larger muffler, new resonators and ribs in the intake and exhaust systems, and quieter tires.

For the retractable hardtop RF model, the trunk depth has been adjusted to fit the bigger muffler, while steering feel has been retuned to match the new rubber. Mazda has also made the induction sound enhancer—previously exclusive to RS-trim models—a standard feature across all soft-top MX-5s in Japan, ensuring some cabin noise remains despite the quieter hardware.

The updated MX-5 complies with new UNECE noise regulations, which have reportedly already led to the discontinuation of several Mercedes-AMG models in Europe. Beyond the noise reduction, the 2027 Japan-market MX-5 benefits from refinements carried over from the Spirit Racing Roadster.

Higher-trim manual models now feature revised suspension setups with Bilstein dampers, improved throttle tuning, and a “heel-and-toe assist” system that mimics auto rev-matching. The engine now revs closer to its redline without sacrificing power output.

A new PS (Pure Sports) trim level debuts, adding 16-inch black RAYS wheels, ventilated Brembo brakes with silver four-piston calipers, Bilstein dampers, and black interior trim. The PS model also introduces a new Zinc Green Metallic paint option, which Mazda plans to expand across multiple models, including those sold in the U.S.

Despite the quieter operation, the 2027 Mazda Roadster in Japan starts at approximately ¥2,500,000, roughly equivalent to $18,000 at current exchange rates.
