Renault India has launched the new Duster Hybrid, positioning it against strong‑hybrid SUVs from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. The three trims – Evolution, Techno and Emotion – start at Rs 16.99 lakh and top out at Rs 19.49 lakh (ex‑showroom). The body and interior are largely unchanged from the regular Duster; the only visual cues are an illuminated grille with the word Hybrid, a large E‑Tech Hybrid plaque on the front fenders and a smaller E‑Tech badge on the rear tailgate. Inside, a brown upholstery gives the cabin a more airy feel.

The powertrain is a new E‑Tech 160. It replaces the 1.5‑L 3‑cylinder engine used in rivals with a 1.8‑L 4‑cylinder unit that delivers 108.5 bhp and 172 Nm. The battery is 1.4 kWh, more than twice the 0.6 kWh in the Toyota Hyryder, and the traction motor can produce up to 208 Nm. The system uses a 4‑speed gearbox for the engine and a 2‑speed gearbox for the traction motor, giving eight fixed ratios. Six operating modes – EV Only, Energy Recovery, Series Hybrid, Series‑Parallel Hybrid, Charging Via Petrol and Petrol‑Only – shift automatically, with an optional E‑Save mode to reserve battery charge.
On paper, the hybrid claims 29 km/l and under‑10‑second 0‑100 km/h acceleration. In real‑world tests in Chennai, the vehicle achieved close to 10 km of pure electric drive in city traffic and an estimated range of 620 km on a full 50‑L tank, falling to 500 km by the end of the drive. The 29 km/l figure is the highest among self‑charging hybrids in India, though highway mileage is expected to be lower.

To accommodate the larger engine and battery, Renault added Frequency Dependent Dampers (FDD) to the suspension. The result is a slightly stiffer feel at low speeds that becomes planted and absorptive as speed increases.

The hybrid trims cut several features to keep the price competitive. Level‑2 ADAS, 360‑degree cameras, auto‑dimming IRVM, Qi‑2 standard wireless charging, lumbar adjustment in front seats, rain‑sensing wipers, Google Services on the infotainment screen and full‑screen maps on the TFT cluster are all missing. Boot space is 544 L (loaded to the roof) because the floor is raised for the battery, and a spare wheel is not offered.

Renault markets the Duster Hybrid as a diesel replacement. It can serve that role in city and slow‑speed driving, but its efficiency drops on highways. The vehicle is best suited for drivers who spend most of their time in urban traffic. Overall, the Duster Hybrid is the most capable self‑charging hybrid on sale in India, but it is not a universal replacement for diesel SUVs.
