BMW is developing its next-generation X5 M, with spy photographers catching a heavily camouflaged prototype testing near the Nürburgring in Germany. Slated to enter production in 2028, the high-performance SUV will be offered in both fully electric and V8-powered versions, acting as the flagship for the X5 and iX5 lineups. The zero-emission variant is set to compete against the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, Porsche Cayenne Electric, Lotus Eletre, and Audi RS Q6.

Despite the camouflage, the prototype displays a notably aggressive stance compared to standard G65 X5 models like the M60e xDrive, featuring chassis tweaks, new wheels, and a dedicated bodykit. The exterior upgrades include deeper front and rear bumpers, profile black trim, a double rear spoiler, a wider kidney grille, and a sculpted hood with integrated vents. The prototype wears provisional lighting units, suggesting unique production LED graphics, while the black five-spoke alloy wheels are placeholders for more intricate production designs.

Inside, the cabin carries over standard G65 X5 tech and practicality while adding M-specific details such as aggressive bucket seats with heavy bolsters, carbon fiber accents, unique digital cockpit graphics, fresh upholstery, and M badging. Under the skin, the heavyweight SUV packs beefier brakes with drilled discs and six-piston calipers, paired with a sharper adaptive suspension and steering setup. While official specs remain unreleased, reports indicate the quad-motor electric variant will churn out around 900 HP (671 kW / 912 PS), comfortably outpacing the 570 HP (578 PS / 425 kW) electric X5 i60.

For comparison, the outgoing X5 M and X6 M rely on a mild-hybrid twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 pushing 617 HP (460 kW / 625 PS), and the upcoming V8 successor is expected to be even more potent, though it remains unconfirmed if it will match the EV’s output.
