Porsche has officially revealed the Mission S concept in New York, previewing a potent mid-engined sports car designed to sit directly above the 911. Unveiled as the first concept under new design chief Tobias Sühlmann, who joined in February from McLaren, the car showcases a revamped styling direction. Company boss Michael Leiters confirmed that Porsche is already developing a new platform for the production version. This platform is engineered to accept pure-petrol and hybrid powertrains, but will not accommodate an electric version due to limited demand for high-end electric sports cars, superseding the scrapped all-electric Mission X concept shown in 2023. The production model will bridge the performance gap between the 911 and the 2013 918 Spyder. Unlike its limited-run predecessor, the road-going version will be a regular series-production model built alongside the 911 in Zuffenhausen, though limited-edition variants are expected under the Sportwagenschmiede 35 strategy. Designed in just eight months, the Mission S features styling heavily influenced by the late-1990s Carrera GT, 911 GT1, 959, and 550 Spyder, incorporating torpedo front lights, a roof air intake, a retractable rear wing, a rear cooling fan inspired by the 917, and telephone dial wheels echoing the 928. Inside, it boasts a stripped-back, driver-focused cockpit with five round instruments featuring an analogue rev counter, physical controls, and a retractable MagSafe smartphone mount instead of a central touchscreen. Technologically, the car sits on a highly flexible internal platform rather than Lamborghini’s mid-engined architecture. While Porsche plans a medium-term mix of combustion and EV models, high-end segments will focus on ICE powertrains featuring four-cylinder, V6, V8, and boxer engines, with a V8 or a flat-eight layout considered logical choices for the new range-topper.
