MAN Engines has joined forces with agricultural machinery manufacturer CLAAS and research institute WTZ Roßlau for a new research initiative called GAMCO (Green Ammonia Multifuel Combine). Backed by funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy under its 8th Energy Research Program, the project runs until October 2029 and investigates an ammonia-based powertrain concept for heavy-duty agricultural equipment under realistic operating conditions. As a carbon-free energy carrier, ammonia is being explored to address heavy off-road applications requiring high performance, long operating hours, and deployment flexibility. MAN Engines contributes its extensive engine development expertise to evaluate the technical feasibility of the concept, while CLAAS brings its machinery manufacturing know-how and WTZ Roßlau provides testing experience for new powertrain technologies. The project aims to scientifically assess the potential and challenges of utilizing ammonia in power-intensive mobile machinery to support future decarbonization efforts.
