BMW rolls out expanded standard active safety tech with Neue Klasse launch

BMW is rolling out a raft of new standard active safety features with the launch of its Neue Klasse platform, marking a step-change in how the brand integrates driver-assistance tech across its lineup. The headline addition is an upgraded Exit Warning system that now includes active door-opening delay, designed to slash the risk of ‘dooring’ accidents—where a parked car’s door swings open into traffic and strikes a cyclist. Using side-radar sensors, the system monitors the lane for approaching vehicles, bikes, or pedestrians and physically locks the door until the hazard clears. The feature joins a broader suite of safety tech that becomes standard across multiple Neue Klasse models, starting with the BMW iX3 and followed by the i3, X5, and 7 Series. BMW claims the rollout is rooted in its ‘Smart, Symbiotic, Safe’ philosophy, positioning assistance systems as quiet, background partners that only step in when absolutely necessary. The Symbiotic Drive system interprets driver intent—via turn signals, steering inputs, or shoulder checks—so interventions like the Lane Keeping Assistant only trigger when an unintended lane departure or imminent collision is detected. If the driver deliberately initiates a manoeuvre, the system stays out of the way, provided there’s no foreseeable risk. The Neue Klasse’s safety suite also introduces an emergency steering intervention that can automatically steer around obstacles—such as a pedestrian stepping into the road or a cyclist in low light—while keeping the car within its lane. BMW says this capability is currently unique in the segment. Behind the tech is a data-driven approach: BMW’s connected fleet in Europe logged 1.6 billion kilometres in the last month alone, triggering 8 million collision alerts to drivers and executing 243,977 active steering or braking interventions that prevented potential crashes. The BMW iX3, one of the first Neue Klasse models to market, has already earned a top five-star rating in the latest Euro NCAP safety tests, which were updated in 2026. The result underscores BMW’s holistic safety strategy, blending passive and active systems to create what the brand calls a cooperative, intuitive partnership between driver and vehicle.
