Ford is recalling 548,463 Ford Expeditions from the 2018 through 2024 model years due to peeling chrome trim on the center console that can develop razor-sharp edges capable of cutting occupants. The defect has been linked to 65 reported injuries and one crash globally.
The issue stems from chrome plating that bubbles, peels, and separates from the underlying material, creating hazardous edges.
Ford initially dismissed the need for a recall, arguing the bubbling and peeling were visible before separation, but further testing revealed that components showing no obvious signs could still fail after environmental testing.

By June 2026, Ford had logged 4,634 warranty claims, 150 field reports, 34 customer call center reports, and six NHTSA complaints related to the defect.
Affected owners will receive instructions to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer for a free inspection and replacement of the center console trim if bubbling or peeling is detected.
The recall highlights a rare but serious interior safety issue, contrasting with the more common technology and software-related recalls affecting modern vehicles.
