According to BMW, the new X5 wasn’t designed with a stronger off-road focus because the previous generation already offered more than enough capability. Senior vice president Philip Koehn stated that enhancing the off-road capability wasn’t a priority, as the X5 is already a capable vehicle. The previous X5 had an Off-Road Package that included air suspension, a locking rear differential, underbody protection, and all-terrain tires, which was more than most owners would ever use. BMW may be working on a more off-road-focused vehicle, rumored to be codenamed G74, which could rival the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. If approved, this new model could arrive in 2029, with a debut scheduled in late 2028. The current X5 is still capable of handling off-road tasks, as demonstrated by BMW’s Spartanburg Performance Driving School, which features an off-road course. The X5’s Off-Road Package, which cost $11,900, was available on the previous generation and included features such as air suspension and all-terrain tires.
