Australian automotive distribution giant Inchcape Australasia is severing ties with Peugeot after years of plummeting sales, marking the second Stellantis brand exit in the region after Citroen was dropped in 2024. The move follows a multi-year freefall in Peugeot’s Australian volume, with the brand selling just 373 units in the first five months of 2026—a 35% year-over-year decline. The Partner van accounted for 43% of those sales, outselling every passenger model in the lineup, including the pre-facelift 308 hatchback, 408 fastback, and SUVs like the 2008, 3008, and 5008. The broader trend is brutal: Peugeot’s Australian sales dropped 29% in 2025 after a 25% slide in 2024, failing to recover even with a refreshed lineup. The brand’s peak of 8,807 units in 2007 remains a distant memory. The split is framed as a mutual decision, with both Inchcape and Stellantis emphasizing a clean break rather than conflict. While Peugeot will stop taking new orders, existing stock will still be available, and the brand will maintain warranty and servicing support during a transitional period. Stellantis insists the brand has a future in Australia, with plans to be announced later. The question now is whether Peugeot will find a new independent distributor or join Stellantis Australia’s stable alongside Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Jeep, and Leapmotor. With Inchcape now out of both Citroen and Peugeot, its Australian portfolio is reduced to Subaru, Chinese brands Deepal and Foton, leaving Stellantis scrambling for a new local solution.
