Traffic to start flowing across new Gordie Howe International Bridge between Canada and U.S.

Traffic will begin crossing the new Gordie Howe International Bridge linking Detroit and Windsor on July 27, 2026, after Canada completed the multibillion-dollar project. The 1.5-mile-long bridge rises 151 feet above the Detroit River at its highest point and adds a second truck crossing at the U.S.-Canada border, where the Ambassador Bridge has long handled commercial traffic. Detroit remains the No. 1 port for truck traffic on the U.S.-Canada border, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Canada funded the estimated $6.4 billion bridge and will share toll revenue with the U.S. government for 15 years, while Michigan will receive revenue after Canada’s costs are recovered. The bridge is named after Gordie Howe, the Canadian hockey legend known as “Mr. Hockey,” who played for the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. Pedestrians and bicyclists with proper identification will be able to cross for free in a few weeks. Construction began in 2018 but faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The bridge is expected to streamline trade, jobs, and tourism between the two countries.
