Shell Rotella announced an upgraded portfolio of heavy-duty engine oils in Houston designed for the upcoming API CL-4 and FB-4 specifications. The product announcement was paired with technical sessions on formulation, laboratory testing, and field inspections at the Shell Technology Center Houston facility. Matt Urbanek, technical manager, described the development program’s focus on engine cleanliness, oil breakdown, and wear during a product technology overview. He noted that Shell evaluates products through industry engine and bench tests, as well as field trials that expose oils to varying loads and operating conditions. Shell states that its T4 15W-40 oil delivers 58% stronger deposit control than its previous CK-4 oil. Its T5 10W-30 exceeds oil-breakdown requirements by more than 90%, while T6 10W-30 provides an average of 66% more wear protection than required under API CL-4 standards. Facility presentations included lab demonstrations testing viscosity, evaporative loss, and cold-temperature flow, alongside 3D scanning technology used to map deposits on used pistons compared with clean ones. Sessions also showcased parts from two trucks equipped with Detroit Diesel DD15 engines, each surpassing 700,000 miles. Shell cited more than 13 million real-world miles for the development program, with about 15 million documented field-trial miles reported as of early October. Karin Haumann, OEM technical manager, noted that the new oils are engineered to protect against breakdown, wear, and deposits while supporting emissions aftertreatment systems. Warranty coverage will increase for T5 Advanced Synthetic Blend to up to 12 years or 400,000 miles, and for T6 Full Synthetic to up to 15 years or 600,000 miles. T4 Triple Protection coverage will remain at up to 10 years or 300,000 miles. Ann-Christin Lentfer, global product and portfolio innovation manager for commercial road transport, emphasized the value proposition of the lubrication limited warranty. The new API CL-4 and FB-4 oils are expected to begin arriving in early 2027, following the first licensing date on Jan. 1.
