Tesla has finally unveiled the second-generation Roadster nearly nine years after its initial announcement, boasting unprecedented performance and the ability to fly for short periods. According to Tesla, nothing has been carried over from the original tri-motor concept.

The new hypercar features an optional ‘Thrust’ or ‘Rocket’ package fitted with cold-gas thrusters developed with technology from Musk’s SpaceX company.

The ‘Thrust’ package assists forward acceleration, achieving a 0-60mph time of 0.81 seconds after a one-foot rollout, while the ‘Rocket’ package enables the car to fly upwards. The rocket-equipped version is not approved for road use.

The Roadster also utilizes an underfloor fan to pull the car to the road for improved grip, similar to the McMurtry Spéirling, alongside an active rear wing that automatically adjusts its angle for optimal downforce.

Tesla demonstrated the flight system by driving the Roadster, boosting it into the air above a Semi lorry cab, performing a mid-flight barrel roll, and landing back on its wheels. Specific duration capabilities for flight remain unclear.

While comprehensive technical specifications remain under wraps, CEO Elon Musk stated the car is capable of 230mph, and potentially “at least half the speed of sound” at 383.5mph.

The vehicle retains a traditional Tesla skateboard chassis with an underfloor battery pack and features two rear-mounted electric motors driving the rear wheels in standard form. Reports suggest output will exceed 1500bhp. The exterior adopts a brutalist, geometric look inspired by the 1976 Lotus Esprit S1.

While pricing has not been officially confirmed, the standard Performance model requires a £50,000 deposit, the Thrust upgrade requires a £250,000 deposit, and the Rocket variant will be sold strictly by invitation only. The launch event took place in Texas, US, at SpaceX’s Rocket Development and Test facility.
