Honda has spent decades building one of the most dominant positions in the global motorcycle industry by selling millions of gasoline-powered two-wheelers annually. However, in markets where electric motorcycles and scooters are becoming increasingly accessible, that dominance faces a serious challenge. Vietnam offers an insightful case study, as rapidly growing electric motorcycle sales reshape a market traditionally led by Honda.

Newly released nationwide sales figures show that Vietnam recorded over 3 million motorcycle and scooter sales during the first nine months of 2026, marking a 25.9% growth over the same period the previous year. The major development lies in the electric segment, where sales surged 90.5% to reach 973,247 units. Electric two-wheelers now account for roughly 32% of all new motorcycle and scooter sales in the country.

The primary beneficiary of this shift is not Honda, but Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast. While Honda remains the largest motorcycle manufacturer overall in Vietnam with sales growing 8.4% this year, VinFast climbed into second place following a staggering 152.1% increase in sales. Yamaha sits in third place, followed by electric two-wheeler maker Yadea in fourth. Half of the top four players are now electric brands, and those electric manufacturers are driving explosive sales growth.

This reshuffling of a market traditionally dominated by Japanese gasoline motorcycles is driven in part by government efforts to curb urban air pollution. Plans to restrict gasoline-powered motorcycles in parts of Hanoi have created a favorable environment for electric alternatives. With companies like VinFast expanding their lineups of electric scooters and motorcycles, riders have more practical alternatives to gas-powered models than ever.

Honda is not struggling outright; its overall motorcycle sales are still growing, and the Japanese manufacturer remains the undisputed market leader in Vietnam. However, its overall market share is shrinking, and its modest growth compared to the exploding electric segment indicates a shift in the market’s center of gravity. Vietnam serves as a prime example of how quickly the landscape can change when electric two-wheelers emerge as viable mainstream alternatives to gasoline motorcycles. The central question facing Honda is how rapidly it can adapt to a market increasingly shifting toward electrification.
