The BMW i3 name has returned, but this time in a more conventional form. The i3 50 xDrive is quick, refined, and retains Munich’s sophisticated dynamic character. With a kerb weight of 2200kg, it’s 345kg heavier than the six-cylinder M350, but it offers an M350-beating 469bhp and 476lb ft of electric power. The 108.7 kWh battery pack charges from zero to 100 per cent in 11 hours at 11kW, and it has a range of between 450 and 567 miles. The i3 50 xDrive is priced from £54,425 and is available with a range of features, including a Panoramic iDrive instrument display and a radical, squarish steering wheel. The car’s refinement is excellent, with minimal road and wind noise, and the ride is smooth. The throttle response is well-calibrated, and the car feels quick, with great chassis balance. The i3 50 xDrive is also available with an ‘engine sound’ feature, but it’s not as convincing as the real thing. The car’s seats are not as comfortable or supportive as the M350’s, but the i3 50 xDrive is still a seriously impressive car. In fact, it’s more appealing than the Porsche Taycan, according to the reviewer. The i3 50 xDrive is a great option for those looking for a refined, dynamic, and solidly built electric vehicle. There’s also an i3 40 xDrive available, with an 82.8 kWh battery, 374hp, and up to 441 miles range, priced from £47,925. The i3 60, which will have more performance and the M350’s adaptive damping and variable steering ratio, is also on the way.
