Grubhub and DoorDash Deploy Serve’s Delivery Robots After Uber Exits

Delivery giants Grubhub and DoorDash are rolling out Serve Robotics’ sidewalk delivery robots in new U.S. markets, marking a major expansion for the autonomous fleet just months after Uber fully exited the company. Serve’s fleet of more than 2,000 robots will now serve customers in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Alexandria, Virginia, through Grubhub’s platform, while DoorDash expands the service to Washington, DC, and San Jose, California. The robots will operate from over 100 Grubhub-partnered restaurants in Chicago and nearly 200 in Los Angeles, bringing autonomous food delivery to sidewalks in these cities for the first time. Serve also opened its first microdepot in Miami, a facility dedicated to staging, charging, dispatching, and maintaining its robot fleet. The move underscores a strategic pivot for Serve, which was spun out from Uber more than five years ago but saw its largest investor divest its entire stake earlier this month amid disagreements over deployment strategy. Beyond food delivery, Serve is also introducing its next-generation hospital robot, Moxi, to three major medical centers: Endeavor Health Edward Hospital in Chicago, Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Los Angeles, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Moxi features significantly improved perception and onboard computing—capable of processing its surroundings up to 15 times faster and delivering 10 times the compute power of previous models. The company currently operates over 2,000 robots across the U.S. and partners with more than 4,000 restaurants, signaling a growing role for autonomous delivery in both consumer and healthcare sectors.
