Ford Bronco Basecamp Should Be More Successful Than Escape PHEV

The 2023 Ford Escape debuted as the final mid-cycle refresh for the model before its discontinuation late last year, though Australia never received that version of the small SUV. Soon, Australian buyers will gain access to the Ford Bronco Basecamp, arriving in 2027 as a China-built extended range electric vehicle (EREV), or Super Hybrid as Ford calls it.

While Australia will not get the American Ford Bronco or the all-electric version of the Basecamp, Ford views it as an ideal fit for the market due to its outdoorsy focus. Ford expects the Bronco Basecamp to achieve greater success Down Under than the short-lived Escape PHEV, which lasted only a year on sale, according to Drive.

Ford Australia president and CEO Fadi Mawal noted that the Bronco Basecamp is a more differentiated and unique product compared to others in its segment, sourced from China to arrive at a more affordable price point. Mawal also pointed to a shifted market with greater acceptance of EV technology compared to five years ago, stating the goal is to be a top player in the segment rather than an afterthought.

The Bronco Basecamp and Transit City are part of a broader plan to significantly expand the brand’s Australian lineup with China-sourced models in the coming years.
