FedEx Corp. has agreed to sell its supply chain division, FedEx Supply Chain, to French logistics giant CMA CGM Group for $1.4 billion, a deal announced on July 1, 2026, and expected to close later that year. The transaction is part of FedEx’s broader strategy to streamline operations and focus on core businesses, following prior moves such as spinning off its Freight unit. Analysts view the sale as a critical step in FedEx’s transformation, even if the immediate financial impact is limited. Ari Rosa, senior equity research analyst at Citi, noted that while the deal may not significantly alter FedEx’s financials, it aligns with the company’s long-term goals of improving efficiency and investor appeal. Rosa suggested that FedEx might have secured a higher valuation if it had delayed the sale, but the current deal still reflects a strategic win for both parties. For CMA CGM, the acquisition nearly triples the size of its North American contract logistics operations through its subsidiary Ceva Logistics, integrating FedEx Supply Chain’s assets and approximately 10,000 employees. The combined entity will operate around 150 warehouses with a total workforce of 20,000 people, positioning it as the sixth-largest third-party logistics (3PL) provider in the U.S. The deal also includes multi-year commercial agreements between CMA CGM and FedEx for air and ocean freight services. Zac Rogers, associate professor of supply chain management at Colorado State University, emphasized that the acquisition strengthens CMA CGM’s 3PL portfolio, capitalizing on current momentum in the logistics sector. The Logistics Managers’ Index for June 2026 reported a 6.5-point increase in warehousing utilization to 69.4, the highest since September 2022, driven by high warehousing prices and shifting inventory strategies. Analysts believe the acquisition reflects a broader trend among logistics companies to expand services amid rising demand. FedEx ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire companies in North America, No. 3 on the TT Top 50 list of the largest global freight companies, and No. 40 on the TT Top 100 list of the largest logistics companies. CMA CGM ranks No. 6 on the global freight TT50, while Ceva Logistics ranks No. 23 on the logistics TT100.
