According to Helene Budliger Artieda, Switzerland’s top trade diplomat, there is a “good chance” the country will secure a lasting trade deal with the U.S. at 15% tariff rates. The deal would provide Swiss companies with a more predictable trading landscape. The U.S. is seeking access to duty-free import quotas for American meat and a $200 billion investment pledge from Swiss companies. Talks are ongoing, with the U.S. reviewing Swiss policies under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act. The goal is to avoid further unilateral tariffs and finalize a permanent agreement. The preliminary framework deal was secured in November, capping levies on exports at 15%, after President Donald Trump imposed 39% tariffs on Swiss goods in August. Budliger Artieda emphasized that Swiss companies care about predictability and stability, and the country is committed to a level playing field. The Swiss government is also dealing with a probe by the U.S. under Section 301, and Budliger Artieda has reassured the U.S. that Switzerland does not engage in policies that discriminate against America.
