BMW Art Cars: 20 Artists, 50 Years of Innovation — Reunited at BMW Welt in Munich

For the first time in history, all 20 BMW Art Cars are on display together at BMW Welt in Munich, marking the 50th anniversary of the iconic collection. The free exhibition runs from 29 July to 31 August 2026, bringing together the complete series of “rolling sculptures” created by world-renowned artists over five decades. The opening on 28 July 2026 also concludes the BMW Art Car World Tour, which has traveled to more than 30 countries. Olafur Eliasson’s “BMW H2R Project” (Art Car #16) is a standout, having been publicly shown only three times since its 2007 debut. The installation features a hydrogen-powered prototype encased in a reflective metal mesh frozen in layers of ice, weighing around two tonnes and illuminated from within, serving as a poetic commentary on sustainability. The exhibition is structured as a chronological journey, beginning with the most recent works—Julie Mehretu’s BMW M Hybrid V8 (Art Car #20) and John Baldessari’s BMW Art Car #19—and tracing the evolution of the series back to its origins. Alexander Calder’s BMW 3.0 CSL (Art Car #1), the first in the collection created in 1975, takes center stage in the finale. The display includes works by Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Esther Mahlangu, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Cao Fei, and others, offering a vibrant panorama of modern and contemporary art. The exhibition also features a timeline documenting the collection’s development alongside BMW’s technological and design milestones. A digital experience enhances the visit, with the Artlas App and a Treasure Hunt game encouraging playful discovery of the Art Cars. The exhibition is complemented by a citywide poster campaign in Munich, showcasing René Staud’s color-coded photo series of the BMW Art Cars. BMW Welt, with its iconic architecture and role as a public meeting place, provides the ideal setting for this unprecedented gathering of automotive art.
