Mercedes-Benz has rolled out the all-new electric C-Class as a ground-up BEV, marking the next step in its midsize-segment electrification strategy. The model’s life-cycle CO₂ footprint is slashed by roughly two-thirds versus the outgoing C-Class ICE car, according to a 360° environmental audit verified by independent assessors. Sustainability was baked in from day one: the development team worked with suppliers to cut supply-chain CO₂ by about 23 % by prioritising low-carbon materials—aluminium, steel, plastics and battery cells. Key highlights include: Design for Environment principles embedded in the engineering process, focusing on material efficiency, recyclability and secondary raw materials; CO₂-reduced aluminium accounting for roughly two-thirds of aluminium demand (sourced from electrolysis plants running on renewables or with high recycled content) used in body, control arms, wheels and battery housings; CO₂-reduced steel—around 45 kg per car—produced in electric-arc furnaces powered by renewable electricity; and a quadrupling of recycled thermoplastics content versus the current C-Class, totalling about 49 kg of post-consumer recycled plastic per vehicle. Recycled-content parts include the frunk tub (50 % post-consumer), wheel-arch cladding (93 %), jacking-point brackets made from 100 % recycled bumpers, bumper carriers (83 %), and seat fabrics with 34 % and 50 % recycled fibres. On the road, the electric C-Class delivers up to 762 km WLTP range on a single charge, with further variants—including a rear-wheel-drive model expected to hit about 800 km—due next year. Efficiency is class-leading: combined energy consumption is rated at 18.5–14.1 kWh/100 km. The 800-volt architecture underpins ultra-fast charging and high recuperation—up to 300 kW—via a new one-box braking system that recovers energy in up to 99 % of braking events. A standard multi-source heat pump leverages waste heat from the drivetrain and battery plus ambient air to slash cabin-heating energy demand to roughly one-third of what a comparable electric resistance heater would use. The intelligent charging ecosystem, MB.CHARGE Public, offers access to more than three million public chargers worldwide, with Renewable Charging ensuring renewable-energy matching across Europe, Canada, the USA and China via green-power certificates. The electric C-Class is built at the CO₂-efficient Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét, Hungary, where a 240 000 m² rooftop solar array feeds the line.
