BMW has finally given the M2 the all-wheel-drive treatment with the new M2 xDrive, marking the first time the compact performance coupe has been offered with AWD. While the standard M2 has always been a rear-wheel-drive purist’s dream since its 2016 debut, the M2 xDrive now splits power between all four wheels via an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, working alongside the Active M Differential and stability control. The system sends power exclusively to the rear wheels under normal conditions, engaging the fronts only when the rears lose traction.

And yes, purists, don’t panic—rear-wheel drive remains the standard setup, with AWD as an optional extra. The M2 xDrive retains the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine found in the standard M2, churning out 473 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. That power is routed through an eight-speed M-tuned automatic transmission (no manual option here), propelling the car to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds—0.3 seconds quicker than the RWD version despite the AWD system’s 121-pound weight penalty.
The M2 xDrive tips the scales at 3,988 pounds, just 121 pounds heavier than the RWD M2’s 3,867-pound curb weight. Acceleration figures are equally impressive: 0-124 mph in 12.8 seconds and a 50-75 mph sprint in 3.7 seconds. Top speed is 155 mph, rising to 177 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package.

The rest of the M2 xDrive’s hardware mirrors the standard car, including 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels (with optional track tires), M Compound brakes with six-piston calipers front and rear, and a choice of fourteen exterior colors—six of which are BMW Individual hues like Borusan Turkish Blue, a first for the M2. The only visual cues are subtle xDrive badges, making it nearly indistinguishable from its RWD sibling. BMW positions the M2 xDrive as a practical alternative for enthusiasts in less forgiving climates, though it’s hard to imagine purists celebrating the move.

Sales kick off later this summer, just as the weather turns sour—perfect timing for those who’d rather not let a little rain ruin their fun.
