A retired USPS worker named Fred Salinas traded his 2025 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4X for a smaller 2026 GMC Canyon AT4X, only to trade back for his old truck three months later after finding it still sitting on the dealership lot. Salinas shared his story in the Official GMC AT4 AT4X 2500HD 3500HD Owners group on Facebook, noting that he just could not get used to the space constraints. His ownership history includes a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 AT4X, a 2025 Sierra 2500HD AT4X, a 2026 Canyon AT4X, and finally his return to the 2500HD AT4X. Another group member, Tim Chavez, shared a similar path of moving from a full-size AT4 to a Canyon before switching to a 2500 AT4X and loving it. Group member Charles Scott pointed out the differences between the two trucks, noting that the Canyon excels in off-road maneuverability, tight trails, and features Baja mode for dune running, while the HD offers superior interior space, towing, and hauling capability, though he mistakenly referred to a ZR2 trim which is a Chevrolet Silverado HD trim rather than a GMC. Kelley Blue Book figures highlight the physical and mechanical differences: the 2026 Canyon AT4X crew cab has an overall length of 213.2 inches and a 5-foot bed, while the 2025 Sierra 2500HD AT4X crew cab measures 250.8 inches long with a 6.5-foot bed. Maximum towing capacity stands at 6,000 pounds for the Canyon AT4X and up to 18,500 pounds for the Sierra 2500HD AT4X. Under the hood, the Canyon uses a 2.7-liter turbo four-cylinder engine generating 310 HP, whereas the Sierra 2500HD AT4X packs a 6.6-liter V8 pushing 401 HP. Interior dimensions from iSeeCars reveal that the Canyon crew cab provides 34.7 inches of rear legroom and 56.1 inches of rear shoulder room, whereas the Sierra 2500HD AT4X crew cab offers 43.4 inches of rear legroom and 65.3 inches of rear shoulder room—delivering nearly 9 additional inches in each direction. Salinas clarified that he does not tow or go off-road, buying his HD strictly for the presence, commanding seating position, and interior room. Pricing data from Kelley Blue Book lists the 2025 Sierra 2500HD AT4X at approximately $85,395, compared to about $59,395 for the 2026 Canyon AT4X. To avoid an expensive downsizing mistake, the article recommends taking an extended or overnight test drive, sitting in the back seat, loading real cargo, measuring parking spaces and garages, getting both trade-in and purchase numbers in writing, and being entirely honest about individual needs.
