Hyundai has just unveiled the eighth-generation Elantra sedan—known as the Avante in South Korea—at the Busan Mobility Show, and it’s a design departure so bold it makes most mainstream compact sedans look instantly dated.

The new Elantra ditches evolutionary styling in favor of Hyundai’s latest “Art of Steel” design language, which emphasizes razor-sharp creases, blocky surfacing, and high-end detailing that feels more like a concept car than a mass-market sedan. The result?

A compact four-door that looks like it could have rolled straight off a show stand rather than a production line.

The Elantra is longer and wider than its predecessor, with over 2 inches added to its overall length and a 1.2-inch increase in width and wheelbase.

The greenhouse has been completely reworked, replacing the outgoing model’s fake C-pillar plastic insert with a real triangular quarter window flanked by the C- and D-pillars—a feature that harks back to the 1980s Hyundai Grandeur but is rare in this class.

The ultra-boxy fender flares are another standout, with complex cutlines and subtle accent creases that catch the light dynamically.

The front and rear ends are dominated by Hyundai’s new “H-edge” lighting signature: vertical light strips at the corners with horizontal elements slightly inboard, forming a clear ‘H’ motif when illuminated—a clear evolution of the design seen on the Santa Fe.

The headlights sit low in the aggressive front bumper, integrated with the bumper’s sharp angles and slim intakes, while the rear features a complex diffuser and a ducktail spoiler.

Inside, the Elantra adopts Hyundai’s new Pleos Connect infotainment system, with a large central display (12.9-inch or 14.6-inch) and a row of physical knobs below for climate control.

A slim digital gauge cluster sits in the driver’s line of sight, and the steering wheel has been redesigned with sharper controls. The shifter has moved to the steering column, following Hyundai’s recent interior layout trends.

The cabin’s design draws inspiration from high-end sofas, with rounded crash pads, recessed ambient lighting, and ribbed surfaces.

The center console features a raised, rounded armrest with wireless charging, and both front seats have their own wireless charging pads. Hyundai has confirmed three new interior colors: Chalk Beige, Cognac, and Ivory Rose.

Under the hood, the Korean-market Avante will launch with two powertrains: a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-4 producing 147 horsepower (up 26 HP) and a 155-horsepower 1.6-liter hybrid, which benefits from optimized motor, transmission, and battery tuning.

The hybrid also introduces a new regenerative braking system, predictive hybrid control, and a Stay Mode that allows climate control and infotainment use while stationary, similar to an EV.

Hyundai claims the new Elantra’s structure is stronger and safer, with a suite of new active-safety features including a Pedal Misuse Safety Assist system.

While full specifications and U.S.-market details remain under wraps, the Elantra’s design—shared with the upcoming next-gen Tucson—signals Hyundai’s intent to push compact sedans into uncharted territory.
