Freight market recovery is intensifying pressure on trucking fleets as driver turnover risks surge, according to the Spring 2026 Truck Driver Survey. The survey, conducted by Conversion Interactive Agency and People. Data. Analytics., found that 58.1% of truck drivers are actively seeking new jobs, a sharp increase from 46.8% in the same period last year. Industry executives warn that tightening driver capacity, stricter regulatory enforcement, and improving freight conditions are making driver retention and recruitment far more competitive. Scott Dismuke, vice president of operations at PDA, emphasized the financial impact of driver turnover, estimating the cost of losing a single driver at approximately $13,000. He noted that drivers are prioritizing factors beyond pay and sign-on bonuses, including fair treatment, strong communication, quality equipment, and respect. Regulatory changes, such as tighter rules on non-domiciled commercial driver licenses and English-language proficiency standards, are further constraining the driver pool. Priscilla Peters, vice president of marketing at Conversion, highlighted that turnover tends to rise when freight markets and carrier rates improve, creating more job opportunities. Tenstreet CEO Tim Crawford reported that while drivers are currently cautious amid market uncertainty, there is a latent pool ready to transition when conditions stabilize. He also pointed to rising recruiting costs and the influence of AI-driven hiring processes. Luke Wachtel, senior vice president of transportation and logistics at Platform Science, attributed the reduced freight market capacity primarily to regulatory changes and noted that drivers are more aware of market dynamics than in previous turnover cycles. The survey underscores a tightening driver market, where fleets must compete not only on compensation but also on stability, communication, and driver experience to curb churn.
