World’s Biggest Car Carrier Left Shanghai With Enough Teslas To Stretch 22 Miles

A Chinese car carrier, the Glovis Nova, has set a national record for electric vehicles shipped in one voyage, carrying 7,738 Teslas from Shanghai to Zeebrugge in Belgium. The ship, which can carry up to 10,800 vehicles at once, is powered by a liquefied natural gas dual-fuel power system. The record haul was made possible by the ship’s optimized deck layout, with the 7,738 cars stretching about 36km (22 miles) and covering roughly 67,600 square meters if lined up bumper to bumper. The Glovis Nova is one of the newest car carriers built in China, and its enormous capacity is a testament to the country’s growing expertise in building massive cargo ships. Tesla’s factory in Shanghai is perfectly positioned to make use of these new ships, with the South Port Terminal in Shanghai serving as a roll-on, roll-off vehicle export hub just 6 miles away. The shipment is a significant milestone for China, which is tightening its grip as the world’s largest new car exporter. Other Chinese companies, such as BYD, are also benefiting from the country’s expertise in building massive cargo ships, with BYD operating its own fleet of car carriers and exporting thousands of electrified vehicles to markets around the world.
