Waymo has recalled 3,871 robotaxis due to a software issue that caused the vehicles to enter and drive through freeway construction zones in Phoenix and San Francisco. The issue occurred in 13 instances without injuries, highlighting ongoing safety challenges for autonomous vehicles. The company’s vehicles failed to recognize freeway construction zones, leading them to enter active work areas. Waymo has suspended freeway driving and is developing software updates and safeguards to prevent similar incidents. The company plans to update its self-driving software to detect when vehicles are in work zones and avoid entering them. This is Waymo’s second recall since May, with the previous recall being for software that failed to stop vehicles from driving into flooded roads. Despite the challenges, Waymo maintains that its self-driving technology statistically outperforms human drivers and is able to reduce property damage claims and bodily injury claims.
