The Volkswagen Group has announced a drastic plan to downsize its model lineup by up to 50 percent, with the goal of focusing on the most attractive market segments and products that deliver the greatest added value for customers. The number of available optional equipment will also be decreased by up to 75 percent. This move is part of the company’s effort to streamline its portfolio and prioritize profitability. Several models have already been discontinued, including the Touareg, Touran, and T-Roc Convertible, as well as Audi’s A1 and Q2. Porsche has also retired the 718 Boxster and Cayman, and will end production of the original Macan. The company is also reducing its annual production capacity to nine million units, a significant decrease from its pre-coronavirus era capacity of around 12 million vehicles. While the company has not commented on reports of potential plant closures or additional layoffs, it has already announced 50,000 job cuts. The move is seen as a drastic measure to address the company’s dire situation, and insiders claim that advisors are recommending that Ducati be put up for sale and Lamborghini become publicly traded.
