Zorge Rubber Solutions has supplied nearly one million rubber-PTFE composite components for Li-ion batteries to a tier 1 supplier of a leading German car manufacturer. The innovative elastomer-membrane system is crucial for the safety and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles. It was developed to meet two key functions: efficient pressure equalization and protection from bursts that could lead to thermal runaway and explosive reactions. The unit features a semi-permeable PTFE film that prevents moisture ingress and offers high resistance to extreme temperature fluctuations and mechanical stress. The rubber-PTFE composite parts are manufactured using a specially developed vulcanization mold and an injection molding process that bonds PTFE films with specific air permeability rates into a firmly bonded composite.
