Six American 500cc World Champions Reunite at Laguna Seca

All six living American 500cc Grand Prix world champions will take exhibition laps at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on August 14 and 15, marking the first time the group has shared the same racetrack in nearly 20 years. Kenny Roberts, Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz, and Kenny Roberts Jr. will headline the motorcycle program at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. The reunion runs from today through Saturday.

Friday’s laps are scheduled for 3:45 p.m., with Saturday’s at 2:05 p.m. On Saturday, the six legends will sign autographs from 10 to 10:40 a.m. and appear on the paddock stage from 3:15 to 3:55 p.m. Organizers call it the first time in the Reunion’s 52-year history that motorcycles have carried a headline role. “To have these six world champions together at Laguna Seca, riding the motorcycles that made them legends, is something fans will remember for a very long time,” said Bruce Canepa of Friends of Laguna Seca.

Between them, the six won 14 of the 23 500cc world titles contested from 1978 through 2000. All six raced at Laguna Seca, and Wayne Rainey won the U.S. Grand Prix there three straight years, from 1989 through 1991.

Kenny Roberts was the first American to win the 500cc title, claiming three consecutive championships from 1978. He transitioned from dirt track, where he won AMA Grand National titles in 1973 and 1974, and retired with 22 premier-class wins and three Daytona 200 victories. He later ran his own Grand Prix team and guided Rainey to three titles.

Freddie Spencer won the 1983 500cc title at age 21, then in 1985 became the only rider to win both the 250cc and 500cc championships in the same season. He finished his career with 27 Grand Prix wins. Eddie Lawson claimed titles in 1984, 1986, 1988, and 1989.

In 1989, he switched from Yamaha to Honda and became the first rider to win back-to-back championships on different brands. He also won two AMA Superbike titles, two Daytona 200s, and the 1990 Suzuka 8 Hours. Wayne Rainey won 24 premier-class races and three straight 500cc titles from 1990 through 1992, after taking AMA Superbike championships in 1983 and 1987.

A crash at the 1993 Italian Grand Prix left him paralyzed. Rainey later co-founded MotoAmerica, which took over U.S. road racing in 2015. Kevin Schwantz won the 1993 500cc title and 25 races for Suzuki.

His fearless riding style and rivalry with Rainey defined the era, and the FIM retired his #34. Kenny Roberts Jr. won four races in 2000 to claim the 500cc title for Suzuki, ending Honda’s six-year hold on the championship. It also made Kenny and Kenny Jr. the only father-and-son pair to win premier-class titles.
