A Tesla Model S driver in Ridgefield, Washington, was caught on dashcam illegally using the emergency shoulder to pass a semi-truck on SR-502/NE 219th Street on June 16, 2026. The incident occurred in the 1500 block of NE 219th Street, just before the intersection with NE 15th Avenue. The driver, heading east toward Battle Ground, was recorded weaving dangerously in front of another vehicle before cutting onto the shoulder to overtake the truck. The maneuver kicked up hazardous dust and debris, risking puncturing tires and causing a potential loss of control. Traffic slowed due to an ambulance with lights on at a previous intersection, and the semi-truck’s slower speed prompted the reckless pass. The Tesla’s tires sent up a cloud of dust as it swerved back into traffic, narrowly avoiding a collision. Commenters on the Reddit thread criticized the driver’s actions, noting the dangers of driving on the emergency shoulder, which is littered with debris that can shred tires. In Washington state, unauthorized use of the emergency shoulder is typically a traffic infraction punishable by a fine of around $136 or more, depending on jurisdiction and court fees. Washington does not use a traditional point system for traffic violations, so the infraction would not add points to the driver’s license.
